I was still quiet. And because of that, I started to get sleepy again. So I didn’t pay much attention to the third person that came into the room. They only looked like a smudge in my vision.
Suddenly, the room was cold and much darker than it was before. I shivered and pulled the covers on the bed closer to my face. I opened my eyes, and the room was pitch black. It had gotten so cold that I could see my breath in front of my face. I shivered again.
“It’s... just a dream...” I mumbled under my breath. But I started to hear a low-toned hissing noise. I rubbed my eyes and blinked a few times. And when I stopped and let my eyes focus, I saw an even darker silhouette standing in front of me. The room around, the bed, the rest of the world: had simply vanished.
The silhouette approached me. I went to back away, but tripped over my own feet. I looked back at it, an expression of fear and pain flashing over my face, and found that it was now hovering over me. As I slowly looked up to its face, I was confronted by the figure. I had to hold back my gasp. I could see only one of their eyes under their hood, which was a shade of dark red with gold flecks of color. The rest of their body was covered in an ashy black cloak. Then the low hissing noise returned. It was from the person. No, the creature. This thing wasn’t human at the least. Not. One. Bit.
I went to let out a scream, but my voice was gone. It had disappeared with the rest of the world. ‘Maybe’, I thought to myself, ‘I will disappear soon as well’. Part of me wanted to. Part of me just wanted to give up and die.
But, to my surprise, I didn’t disappear. The thing, whatever it was, just stood there. Looking at me. Observing my face, like it had never seen another living creature in its entire life. However long that was...or is...
The moment it saw tears budding in my eyes, it flew backwards, only to slowly, cautiously approach me again. I tried to back up more, but I was apparently hitting an invisible wall. I looked at it with wide eyes, and I went stark white.
But then it did something that I didn’t expect. Something that made me gasp a little, although my eyes were still wide with fear, and the sound never made it into the air. And what they did was simple enough, but it struck me.
The creature bent down onto the ground, and gently laid its hand on my cheek. And the hand felt... almost human. Not that of a monster, or a beast. It was gloved with a long, white, silk glove. A tear streamed from my eye and onto the glove. And it was only a matter of seconds before reality came flooding back to me. I was in shock. Their eyes. It was their eyes.
Those eyes were full of Anger and Hatred, but also Sadness and Fear. They were full of tattered stars filled with remnants of hope and forgotten, shattered dreams. But it all was only for a second. Maybe two. And then it was all gone. The dark, and that... whatever it was... simply vanished into thin air... and I still felt the gentle press of its hand on my cheek. I only knew one thing now: it would be back. Not now, not soon, but it would be. One way or another.
It would come back for me.
